Peer Inspection Report

I joined VLS in 1991 directly out of college. I interviewed on campus and in-house and was extremely impressed with everyone I spoke to. I had always worked for smaller businesses and wanted to continue since I felt that Iâd be an integral part of the firm. VLS emphasized this belief. Working in different departments my first couple of years, I was able to learn all aspects of the firm. After that I chose to specialize in LEAs, I picked up the knowledge in school finance, that helped me obtain my current position as District Coordinator Fiscal Affairs for North Orange County Community College District.

During my tenure at VLS, I gained lifetime friends. In fact, three VLS alumni (friends) are also working at our District, including my boss. VLS taught us to strive for excellence and to obtain the highest integrity in everything we do. Their mission to make a positive difference stays with you even after leaving the firm. I left VLS after seven great years to further my career in public education.

I believe that VLS is a wonderful place to work and I would encourage anyone to join their firm. They will teach you how to deal with all levels of employees in the workplace, supervisory skills (which are invaluable), and how to present yourself as a professional. The technical skills you gain will follow you throughout your career. I think one of the most important skills I learned was ãanalytical reviewä skills. They taught me to question things and look at financial statements and accounts with a different viewpoint. ãDoes this really make sense?ä Asking that question and knowing the answer helps you truly learn and understand a situation as well as preparing you for any questions that may arise.

I believe in VLS so much that I continue to call on them to perform special work and provide advice to my District when needed.
