VLS Client Achieves Great Honor...
KIPP Bridge Awarded
Charter School of the Year
KIPP Bridge Charter School, a public middle school in West Oakland, California,
received the Hart Vision Award as Charter School of the Year at the 18th Annual
California Charter Schools Conference. The Conference was held at the San Diego
Convention Center in early March. The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA)
bestowed this prestigious honor to 2 out of 733 California charter schools for their
commitment to students of all backgrounds and for making a true difference in their
communities. Dr. Olga Mohan High School in Los Angeles was the other recipient.
“This award is a true testament to the commitment of the school's teachers and
leaders, and great validation that KIPP Bridge is on the right path to prepare its
students for success in school and life," said Lauren Hamilton from KIPP Bay Area
Schools. KIPP Bay Area Schools oversees KIPP Bridge and is a valued client of Vicenti,
Lloyd & Stutzman.
In the 2009-2010 school year, KIPP Bridge earned an API score of 864, a jump of
75 points over the previous year, making it the second most improved middle school
in the Oakland Unified School District. Last year, the founding class of KIPP Bridge
students graduated high school, and over 80% enrolled in college for the fall term.
KIPP Bridge serves mostly minority and low-income students: 71% of its enrolled
students are African American, 24% are Latino, and 75% of students qualify for the
federal free and reduced price meals program.
Lolita Jackson, Principal of KIPP Bridge, accepted the award on behalf of the school,
amongst a crowd of proud students which also included VLS Partner Wade McMullen
and Senior Manager Derrick DeBruyne. “We’re very proud of our association with
KIPP Bridge, KIPP Bay Area Schools, and the entire charter school community,” said
McMullen.
